In response to the Urda rail accident, Spain’s Ministry of Transport has rolled out a stringent package of safety protocols, temporarily scaling down high-speed train traffic between Madrid and Sevilla to establish wider safety margins.
Enhanced Oversight and Dual Control Systems
Transport Minister Óscar Puente confirmed that the reduction in train frequency is a necessary interim step to keep convoys further apart until the state-of-the-art ERTMS safety system is fully deployed across the entire corridor.
- Increased operational distance between running trains.
- Mandatory dual oversight by traffic controllers for every instruction issued to train drivers.
- Accelerated rollout of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS).
The decisive move underscores authorities’ commitment to zero-tolerance on railway safety, temporarily prioritizing maximum operational security over standard scheduling capacities.
